The Baltic passenger train operators Elron, Vivi and LTG Link announced a joint procurement for Rail Baltica regional trains in Tallinn on 18 March. Up to 20 trains compatible with the European standard gauge (1,435 mm) and capable of speeds of up to 200 km/h are planned to be acquired. Estonia will initially procure five trains, with an option for two more; Latvia may acquire up to five and Lithuania up to eight.
The new trains will operate on the newly built 1,435 mm infrastructure, enabling faster, more comfortable and more environmentally friendly travel. According to Lauri Betlem, Chairman of the Management Board of Elron, the joint procurement marks an important step towards launching regional rail services on the Rail Baltica line. Estonian Minister of Infrastructure Kuldar Leis said the tender confirms that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are moving the project forward together, while also strengthening security along the European Union’s eastern border.
The estimated value of the procurement is approximately EUR 250 million. TEGOS advised Elron on preparing the procurement documents and contract and supported the company throughout the tender process.
