New guidance document in Estonia: principles for the use of actors’ voices

Law firm TEGOS advised the Estonian Actors’ Union on the preparation of a guidance document regulating the use of actors’ voices. This is the first document of its kind in Estonia that addresses both the use of voice and the creation of synthesized voices.

The principles are mandatory for anyone who wishes to use the voices of actors represented by the Estonian Actors’ Union. The aim is to ensure that the possibilities of technology and artificial intelligence operate in accordance with the protection of the rights of creative individuals.

Reimo Sagor, Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Actors’ Union, expressed his appreciation with this cooperation: “EAU is pleased that, in collaboration with excellent legal experts, we have reached another important milestone in formulating principles to protect the work and profession of actors in this era of technological onslaught. A voice is part of personal data and one of an actor’s defining characteristics that must be valued and protected.”

Technological development offers new solutions, but it must be implemented responsibly, respecting the creation and professional contribution of actors.

The client was advised by partner and head of the IP/IT in Estonia Priit Lätt and lawyer Enelin Terav.
